As soon as bleeding starts in a great quantity in the human body, the blood pressure drops as a defense mechanism, and consequently the rate of bleeding slows. At the time of death, blood pressure ceases and the bleeding stops. Occasionally after death, there will be a drainage of blood from a large wound of the body. This drainage, a mixture of blood and serum and frequently other matter, is generally quite dark in color. The amount of blood around a body can be an important investigative fact. A large amount of blood from a small wound would indicate that the victim survived the attack for a considerable length of time, or that the blood drained out due to the relative position of the body and wound. A small amount of blood would indicate death occurred shortly after the wound was inflicted, or that the body was moved after substantial bleeding occurred.
